How The Hell DOES It Work?

Early into AA, I ran into of folk who would say stuff like,

“I don’t know how this works, all I know is that it does”.

I started to think that here was this room full or morons – a Society of Basement Dwelling Idiots, – Meeting Goers, – “Aliens” – who claimed to have solved their alcohol problem yet didn’t know how it happened.

So they couldn’t tell me “How it worked”

Yet I could pickup a Book and read fourteen pages clearly detailing precisely “How it Works”. It seemed very odd to me. Hell it IS odd! Stupendously weird.

SO I read those fourteen pages in a chapter called “HOW IT WORKS” – and could only surmise that these weird people probably either didn’t read their own Program or just thought that they might feign ignorance in order to appear humble. As it turns out there is a little of both involved. VERY involved.

But at the time I was not positively sure which or if either was true – but I figured SOMETHING very strange was happening, because whatever “The commons solution” to alcoholism was, they seemed hell-bent on not having me learn what it is.

So I decided to look further into the Program myself, figuring they either hadn’t done so, or were just hiding the solution.

Here’s what I discovered: I found that there’s really no reason to NOT KNOW THE SOLUTION, because it was clearly laid out for all in the Program of recovery, in that Big Book. It’s there for
the taking to anyone who wanted it.

Sometimes I like to take the following to heart whenever someone scolds me – for actually having the NERVE to know how to not drink:

“Then they outlined the spiritual answer and program of action which a hundred of them had followed successfully.” (42:2)

Of course I can’t do that – if I don’t know the spiritual answer.

I know that I am not the ONLY one who knows the answer. There are others – maybe you reading this silly rant right now – that knows EXACTLY what the newcomer MUST do in order to recover. You know because YOU DID IT! And then there are others too who haven’t got a clue.

When I don’t like the cut of someones jib I just go find someone else with whom I CAN get along.

I did that. And I got what I need to save my life. God shows us how to ” . . . how to create the fellowship you crave.” (164:1)

Does He not?
